This DVD is a mishmash. A low-rent theatrical short here, a traipse through a carnival shrinking house there, some composed shots of dilapidated spookshow posters in between. In fact, “Monsters Atomize the Pajama Party” is nearly impossible to characterize. It’s not a feature film, though there is a feature (”Tormented”) included somewhere on the disc. Nor is it primarily about the title segment, a short monster/comedy flick starring a bunch of college kids and a angry scientist. Instead, it’s almost as if the entire DVD is made up of extras. But what a grand collection of extras it is! For one coarse effect, you collect monsters, happenin’ 60s co-eds, foul narration, REALLY awful acting, a bit of 3-D, a guy in a bargain-basement gorilla outfit and a whole lot more! Watching this disc feels like channel surfing in a world in which the Cramps speed all the TV stations. It’s like watching snippets of movies made by people who…well…wish they could originate better movies. The result? It’s absolutely, over-the-top brilliant; a patchwork of lowbrow cinema that will leave you wondering, “Where the heck did this stuff ever play?? ”

My only complaint about this disc (and I’m docking it a whole star for this) is that it’s REALLY hard to navigate! The viewer is beautiful mighty left to honest stumble onto various scenes by trial and error. It’s an astounding collection of clips and snippets overall, but this thing should have near with a plan.

DVDs with a lot of extras are gigantic. But when one is almost entirely extras, it falls flat. So I feel the need to warn mal-informed b-movie fans as to what they are truly getting on this disc.

Now accomplish no mistake, I like obscure sci-fi/horror as noteworthy as the next geek (I rate The Brain From Planet Arous 4 stars, for Pete’s Sake), but that’s not really what this dvd is about. While it may be fun once in a while for parties, avoid it if you are considering it on its hold merits. To devour this disc, one must really really be on the lookout for regional rarities. If you like looking at other people’s home movies, that is a head start; and don’t reflect I am exaggerating because some home movies are in fact included on this disc. (Manos is an A-Picture sage compared to some of this stuff.)

First, the navigation of the dvd was admittedly great: sort of like a spectral appreciate hunt. Some items are highlighted but not explained in text, while others are not shown at all, so you really have to search. Some people may secure it annoying. I found it rather charming. With patience, you’ll locate them all.

BTW, this dvd is not really for kids, although there is not anything too objectionable. But most would probably not have the patience to sit through this. Great of the disc achieves a determined amount of nostalgic spookiness (as opposed to being plain) by being the most hypnotically boring things these eyes have ever seen.

A collection of trailers from midnight spook shows is fun for 15 minutes, but continues on for another 30, becoming very repetitive and lifeless and repetitive and plain and repetitive. Buffs will indulge in playing Dwelling the Art, as these stage shows often ripped off poster images from movies of the time, such as Beverly Garland screaming in Not Of This Earth. Some are droll or cold, but they objective go on forever. I didn’t even perceive the peaceful gallery of poster art; there were 300 items!

The 3-D Asylum of the Insane is a genuinely peculiar, headache-inducing affair even with the free glasses. At first it consists of ecstatic suburban families throwing footballs at the camera. Then a yo-yo expert comes on. Finally, three costumed weirdos construct stabbing motions at the lens for approximately 13 hours (actually it only seemed that long) . This was disturbing in a Flying Monkey sort of plot.

The title feature is terribly slow but watchable hokum about portly and rather aged sorority sisters spending the night in a creepy house. Then there is a short where a guy turns into a werewolf as he returns with snacks to his car at the Drive-In Theater: glorious lame, uncomfortably idiotic. Another is a trek through a carnival spook house: why, I must ask? Another is an educational short about a boy who is tremulous, why that is radiant and how he can combat his fears: it will likely have you wishing for Joel and the ‘Bots. Another follows a guy as he is menaced by grotesque women in gowns: like a low-rent Carnival of Souls and nowhere advance as valid.

There are other extras, too, which you can read about for yourself. I only mean to give my acquire on things without the bombastic ad-speak, and I notion most of the extras were blah. I am not criticizing the wretchedness attach out by the makers of this disc, only the flawed thinking slack it. To give you an thought, one of the “hidden gems” in the navigation is footage of a skull that turns to the camera and says “Stop icy,” and that’s it. Ho-hum.

I will say that some of the peaceful short movies included are not bad; one about a mummy and one in an operating room are of particular artistic merit. I wish I knew exactly what they were. But they are the exceptions and definitely not the rule.

The Bert I. Gordon film Tormented is the most delectable thing on the disc, but it seems like sort of a last-minute add-on, rather than one of the main attractions. A matter of perspective and (bad) taste, perhaps. If you grew up with these spook shows, maybe you’ll feel differently. But I feel that they easily could have chopped out some of the “junk” and added another full-length feature. The disc objective needed less salad and more meat.

In summation: you catch a lot, but what you gain is not too beneficial. Like a cheap all-you can-eat buffet where the food has been out under the heat lamps too long.

P.S. IMHO this all objective goes to point to how advantageous William Castle really was at his showman shtick.

I took my 5 year old son and his friend to see this movie. My son is a HUGE Piglet fan and sleeps with him every night. His friend could care less about Piglet, but what the heck it’s an opportunity to eat popcorn. I am happy to report both children really enjoyed the movie, as did all of the children in the theater from what I could tell. The whole gang goes looking for Piglet after he wonders off during a honey hunting escapade. At his home they find a book of wonderful pictures of their time together. They believe if they follow the pictures it will lead them to Piglet. Each picture leads to a new story. And that’s the best part, they are NEW stories. Not just Disney rehashing the old for the sake of making a buck. There is a great sequence in the end involving all the friends coloring pictures for Pigelt and I could just imagine little one’s thinking they couldn’t wait to get home and color. There’s no foul languange, no potty jokes, no violence, just wonderful characters, sweet songs, and friendship. It was a great break from today’s stressful world.

I am 4 and it was a good movie. Cause all the friends help each other. They co-operate to have the job done. Friends are good. My grandmom helped me write this. It is a good movie for kids and grandmoms

While John Wayne became a star, this striking ahead-of-its-time 70mm widescreen film was dismissed, forgotten and virtually lost. In the 1980s it was rediscovered and restored but previous DVD releases were only the alternate 4×3 format since most theaters at that time (early 30s) were unable to show a widescreen format properly. And most TVs were “square” as well.

Fox publicity says it accurately and simply: “In this sweeping pioneer adventure, a courageous young scout (Wayne) leads hundreds of settlers across treacherous cliffs, through brutal snowstorms, Indian attacks and buffalo stampedes to their destiny out West. Along the way, he loses his heart to a beautiful pioneer woman (Marguerite Churchill) and never stops trying to win her love. Tyrone Power co-stars in this visually spectacular epic.”

Digitally restored and re-mastered from the original 70mm elements, an alternative full-frame edit is also included in the DVD package.

Not bad at all. It took a while, but Fox is treating this film like it deserves!

This film has been shown on TCM in its true aspect ratio. Every time I see it when channel surfing, I get sidetracked and stick around. The BW cinematography is beautiful and the story is engaging.

On a lot of levels, it was way ahead of its time in scope and ambition and visual sweep. It is certainly worth seeing not just as an anomaly of early filmmaking but for the pure entertainment value. Duke Morrison’s performance is confident and charismatic and it is fun to see him become “John Wayne” in front of your eyes.

Highly recommended.

PLEASE NOTE THAT ONCE AGAIN AMAZON HAS LUMPED REVIEWS FOR ALL VERSIONS OF “THE BIG TRAIL,” THUS DENIGRATING THIS DVD VERSION!!!

I am baffled as to why reviewers have given the restored 70mm (wide screen) version of “The Big Trail” anything but five stars. As other reviews have indicated, the film was made on the cusp of “talkie” movies and the innovation of William Fox’s 70mm The Grandeur Process that would eventually lead to modern day wide screen format films in 1953–twenty-three years after “The Big Trail.” As such, viewers need to keep in mind that the script, filming, and editing were all based, in various degrees, upon the silent film format of filming. Furthermore, this is not really what I would call a “western” by today’s standards, although it clearly is the template for the genre. Nor is is it an action or drama film. Rather, “The Big Trail” is a silent movie “lag” that has seldom been repeated in movies with sound: it is, what I prefer to call (I have no idea if there really is such), an EPIC genre film. The “frontier,” the “trail” and the “story” are the movie; not the characters, the plots, or the themes. The history of the film is, as discussed by others, a sad one; but hopefully this new release (2008) of “The Big Trail” will vindicate its greatness.

WARNING: If you like “traditional” westerns, lots of action, drama, or other modern aspects of the western genre, “The Big Trail” will most likely not appeal to you. “The Big Trail” was made before CGI, wide spread use of models and stage sets, and standardized props and costumes. Instead, Walsh went for “realism.” And he had the advantage of having both worked as a “cowboy” on cattle drives and spending time with well known American Indian leaders. I cannot state for certain, but I believe that Raul Walsh wanted to re-establish a base line for how westerns should be made. “The Big Trail” was definitely a good start; unfortunately the economy and the times were not ready. Even more unfortunate, when Hollywood did restart the western genre, they took Raul Walsh’s ideas and bent them in the “wrong” direction. As such, then, you may want to stick with your favorites or check out “newer versions” of “The Big Trail,” such as “How The West Was Won.”

As I stated above, I feel that “The Big Trail” is the template that started the western genre of movies with sound. In deed, I would argue, that while I label it an “Epic” genre film, it is the mother of the western genre, and one of the finest “westerns” ever made. The fact that it has not been available in its filmed format until now is most likely why so few–if any other–link subsequent westerns to this film. Most notable of these “innovations” is the use of western settings as an integral component of westerns. “The Big Trail” majestically displays the beauty and splendor of the west, as Raul Walsh filmed in at least two locations each in Arizona, Montana, and Utah; three locations in Wyoming; five locations (including Sequoia National Park for the conclusion) in California; and one or more sites in Oregon. (Many of the scenes include vistas of over five National Parks). The entire film was shot on location and on a budget of approximately $2 million dollars! Many of the locations seen in “The Big Trail” are not even there today.

Unlike many subsequent movies and television shows about “settlers” going west, “The Big Trail” actually depicts many (rather than none, one or two) of the true hardships endured in their journeys. The film shows people dying of thirst and other environmental hazards; and while not overtly stated, portrays the fact that more people died from the “elements” than from the one “Indian” attack (which have become the center piece of newer westerns). Walsh shows babies–human and animals–being born; couples getting married; spouses and children dying; the elderly dying; and many other aspects of life on the trail–including internal strife. Many of these aspects became templates for future films; others were never–to my knowledge–shown again. For example, it shows the wagons actually being lowered by ropes over cliffs! “The Big Trail” also establishes the types of characters that became central to the western genre–in particular, the rugged individualistic loner; the tough guy. Conversely, I don’t think another western has come close to capturing the nature of Tyrone Power Sr.’s character, Red Flack, in costume or portrayal of the “grungy bad guy.” And one cannot ignore the fact that it was Raul Walsh who dared to take an unknown “actor” named Duke Morrison, change his name to John Wayne, and cast him as the lead. That 23 year old Wayne doesn’t seem polished to many should be no surprise; rather that Wayne does so well is a true harbinger of his future in films. Add to this the fact that many of Wayne’s lines were not written (by request of Walsh) but rather elicited by the other character’s lines–often impromptu as well–and I find Wayne’s performance to be one of his finest! But I know that it will still take many years before Wayne’s critics wake up and recognize that he really was a great actor as well as a great presence on the screen–his personal opinions aside.

Another phenomenal aspect of this movie, which has not really been touched on, is that there were actually four casts–American, German, Spanish and Italian stars–and the film was shot in both 70mm and 35mm (full screen at the time). That means that Walsh had to shot each scene at least four times with two different types of cameras–more cameras if he wanted extra footage. This in itself is amazing, especially given that there were: 1) nearly a thousand Native American actors and extras–including Charles Stevens, a grandson of Geronimo, and Nino Cochise (uncredited), a grandson of Cochise (both Cochise and Geronimo are legendary Chiricahua Apache leaders); 2) over 2000 extras; and 3) over 1500 animals (horses, cattle, oxen, pigs, mules, etc.).

In deed, I would (as a non-trained film critic) not be surprised to see “The Big Trail” compared to, and eventually seen as superior to, many of the movie classics. For those who have seen previous releases or the film on television, please rent or buy this version to enjoy the real version of “The Big Trail”–I have both. The quality of this DVD, especially given the age and processing that it had to go through is superior to many “new” movies. The bonus material is informative, although the the commentator, film historian/author Richard Schickel, is often biased in his comments and his commentary does have inaccurate information (e.g., Moisie is not in Utah, but Montana; and the buffalo scene was filmed there on the Flathead Indian Reservation because the herd was the only sizable herd left in 1930).

This DVD highlights just a comparative few of the very special moments of the classic Ed Sullivan Show on television. It is a real treat to own and watch; the viewer plays and can replay a classic comedy routine by Jackie Gleason as well as countless novelty acts. Ed Sullivan exercised enormous control over the show and the result is quality entertainment. A very young Julie Andrews sings “I Could Have Danced All Night” from My Fair Lady during a episode in 1956. Sammy Davis Jr. and Ella Fitzgerald sing together in another wonderful clip. The Beatles. The Rolling Stones. Some of the clips are in black and white but it doesn’t diminish the viewer’s enjoyment one bit. The quality of earlier color video clips is not as good as I had wished it be but color tv wasn’t up to today’s quality standards at that time. Although the DVD show is 98 minutes long it goes by as if it were just a few minutes. Included is a rare interview with Ed Sullivan and his wife from 1958. I would strongly recommend this DVD as a BUY! for those who want to reminisce or for anyone who wants a splendid introduction to the talents of that time.

I suspect the five-star reviews of this DVD were written by spammers working for the company that sells it.

These compendium DVDs are routinely made by stupid jackasses who figure our attention span is only 10 seconds (the MTVers) so there’s no point in showing an entire performance. What we get here is Carol Burnett talking about Ed Sullivan and occasionally throwing out little snippets of the acts. We get only a few seconds of the comedians and novelty acts, though they sometimes provide a whole song, other times a fraction of the song. This format is so annoying I didn’t much like the DVD.

Rob Bell, pastor at Mars Hill Baptist Church in Michigan, created the Nooma video series to give colossal visual presentations to scriptural truths. In Lump he relates a legend of his young son having some sin derive up with him to all of us and our Blooming Father. But the emphasis and point to it all is that we can never do anything in the world to cause God to adore us any less than he already does.

The production is tight, visuals plain on, and sound/music striking. I’d suggest buying all the Nooma series for employ in your Bible studies or group settings!

Win hits home again in the DVD “Lump” (#10 in the Nooma Series) . This is one of a few in the series which came out of a sincere life scenario in his household with his young son.

After the young boy lied about one thing and got away with it, he proceeded to do so again. But it all mercurial catches up to him. When his father (Buy) comes home he considers what he needed to say to his son while he was hurting. Rather than condemning, yelling, or punishing, he realizes that first, his child needs to know that he is unruffled loved. What a mammoth example of God’s like for us even in the midst of our shortcomings and struggles.

The Nooma series is broad for older teens and young adults. This one is seemingly appropriate for younger teens, as well. This is ideal for Bible inspect, group meetings, and could even be primitive in a appreciate setting as a main message with some follow-up Q&A and/or discussion time.

I can’t wait for this to near out on DVD! Honest now, during the arid summer season, this is one of the best shows on TV. The build-up is enchanting, the experts (I fancy “Dinosaur George”) are eloquent and knowledgeable. The “fight” scenes are engrossing to sight but, to me, the background info is what makes them fascinating. It’s isn’t objective conjecture, but studying the fossils, the behavior of living animals, etc. Then they achieve everything they learned on the scene in the finale. I’m on the edge of my seat by the time the raze fight is played out.

One person gave “JFC” a single star, complaining about the accuracy of some of the material in the series. His qualification for doing so, he said, is his passion for dinosaurs, which I do not doubt. I would not presume to match knowledge with even a ten or 12-year-old dinosaur enthusiast…people who care for dinosaurs tend to know a lot about them. It’s like the one “fantasy” we can indulge, because it’s seen as just fantasy. If you’re into World of Warcraft or Middle Earth or amusing books, it can be looked down on as nerdy and useless, whereas shimmering the name of every Triassic predator…well, you’re composed a nerd, but the knowledge itself seems less useless, because it’s about the valid world. Or, a recreation of the accurate world, more accurately.

And that was our one-starring critic’s complaint, that the recreators of this series played speedy and loose with these ultimate wintry cases (even using the language of crime scene investigation sometimes, to very mixed conclude) . There is no doubt that the producers and animators have taken some spectacular guesses and have extrapolated far beyond what the often meager evidence would allow. But this is NOT the O.J. Simpson trial. It is, largely, a thin sciency-sounding excuse to keep on some incredible battle scenes. Very few young boys (and many girls) will be immune to the excitement of watching two monsters clash. It’s Godzilla versus Mothra, except these fanatically alive to paleontologists adding ringside color are legitimizing the whole thing with fossils and CAT scans and references to living animals.

And that’s the series’ undeniable strength. The enthusiasm, even passion, for learning that it could engender in some kids formerly only alive to in completely imaginary monsters. Not that there’s anything unsuitable with imaginary monsters–I happen to like several. But to harness that imagination in the service of educated speculation in pursuit of more facts about our planet’s engaging history seems an even more wonderful pursuit. This series has the capacity to ignite a passion for learning about dinosaurs.

My more substantive criticism of the “JFC” (I can’t write that without thinking of Jersey Fried Chicken) shows is that the battle scenes are too runt to merit their build-up. Working with usually sparse and fragmentary evidence and making stout hypothetical leaps takes up about 75 percent of the reveal, with the right battle taking up only a quarter or so. The easy fix here would be to beget it a half-hour indicate, which would achieve the science speculation in fine balance with the battle scenes.

I also consider the paleontologists could provide a lot more warning about the nature of the guesses they are making without damaging their enthusiasm or the excitement of the present. There’s nothing ghastly with saying, “We don’t have enough information to know, but we contemplate something a exiguous like this might have happened.” If anything, that might inspire a generation of budding paleontologists to work on creating techniques that would enable us to speculate with more and more plausibility.

History will place an asterisk next to A.I. as the film Stanley Kubrick might have directed. But let the record also show that Kubrick–after developing this project for some 15 years–wanted Steven Spielberg to helm this astonishing sci-fi rendition of Pinocchio, claiming (with good reason) that it veered closer to Spielberg’s kinder, gentler sensibilities. Spielberg inherited the project (based on the Brian Aldiss short story “Supertoys Last All Summer Long”) after Kubrick’s death in 1999, and the result is an astounding directorial hybrid. A flawed masterpiece of sorts, in which Spielberg’s gift for wondrous enchantment often clashes (and sometimes melds) with Kubrick’s harsher vision of humanity, the film spans near and distant futures with the fairy-tale adventures of an artificial boy named David (Haley Joel Osment), a marvel of cybernetic progress who wants only to be a real boy, loved by his mother in that happy place called home.

Echoes of Spielberg’s Empire of the Sun are clearly heard as young David, shunned by his trial parents and tossed into an unfriendly world, is joined by fellow “mecha” Gigolo Joe (played with a dancer’s agility by Jude Law) in his qust for a mother-and-child reunion. Parallels to Pinocchio intensify as David reaches “the end of the world” (a Manhattan flooded by melted polar ice caps), and a far-future epilogu propels A.I. into even deeper realms of wonder, even as it pulls Spielberg back to his comfort zone of sweetness and soothing sentiment. Some may lament the diffusion of Kubrick’s original vision, but this is Spielberg’s A.I. (complete with one of John Williams’s finest scores), a film of astonishing technical wizardry that spans the spectrum of human emotions and offers just enough Kubrick to suggest that humanity’s future is anything but guaranteed. –Jeff Shannon

Based on the perennial nonfiction bestseller by H.G. Bissinger, Friday Night Lights looks at high school football in the harsh light of reality, finding heart and hardness while stirring our emotions. Actor-director Peter Berg (Very Bad Things, The Rundown) is Bissinger’s cousin; he knows the material well, and understands how an obsession with winning turns high school kids into somber, over-pressured gladiators–expendable soldiers in a community war against shame and obscurity. The fact-based story focuses on the 1988 football season of Odessa-Permian high school in West Texas, and as a fast-paced sports movie, Berg delivers the goods with a rousing, frenetically styled crowd-pleaser. But there’s darkness in this tale of weary underdogs, including an abusive father (well-played by country music star Tim McGraw), threatening townsfolk, an injured star running back (Derek Luke), a tormented quarterback (Lucas Black), and the melancholy coach (Billy Bob Thornton) who takes his team to the finals. Berg’s film could use less flashy cutting and more drama to support its gridiron intensity, but Friday Night Lights offers a refreshing alternative to the conventional sports movie, and makes a perfect triple-feature with the equally exciting documentaries Go Tigers! and The Last Game. –Jeff Shannon
